Order intake was +4.1% higher than in the 1st quarter of the year, with the UK's Machinery Manufacturers' Section again leading the way, reports an MTA survey.

The results of the UK Manufacturing Technologies Association Trends Survey for the 2nd quarter of 2006 showed that order intake was above that in the 1st quarter, although the pace of growth slowed a little from the 'hectic' start to the year The key points of the survey, to which there were 108 respondents from across the Association (higher than the previous survey as the companies that were members of BHECTA are now eligible to take part in the MTA surveys), were as follows

1 - The percentage balance for business confidence in the 2nd quarter of 2005 was +28%, led by an improved outlook among the respondents from the Machinery Manufacturers Section; in the 1st quarter of 2006 the balance was +24%.

2 - Order intake was +4.1% higher than in the 1st quarter of the year, with the Machinery Manufacturers' Section again leading the way.

3 - The outlook for the 3rd quarter is mixed and, with the Machinery Manufacturers' Section expecting a significant drop in orders compared to the 2nd quarter (led down by export demand which is not unusual in the summer period), the overall trend identified by the respondents is for a -1.1% fall in order intake compared to the 2nd quarter.

MTA director general, Andrew Manly commented: "This was another good quarter for the industry and, although the outlook for the next period is weaker, this is mainly due to seasonal factors and only really represents a not unexpected pause in the growth trend over the summer months.".
