UK machine tools order intake was +3.8% higher in the third quarter than in the second quarter of 2006, with the Machinery Importers' Section leading the way, said UK's MTA.

The results of the Manufacturing Technologies Association Trends Survey for the third quarter of 2006 showed that order intake growth continued over the summer, a time when we often see a softening in demand due to the holiday season The key points of the survey, to which there were 96 respondents from across the Association, were as follows

1 - The percentage balance for business confidence (see note 2 below) in the 3rd quarter of 2006 fell to +10%, with all three MTA sections reporting a small positive balance; in the 2nd quarter of 2006 the balance was +28%.

Although this is the weakest of the year, it is better than in the 3rd quarter of 2005 when the balance was -8%.

2 - Order intake was +3.8% higher than in the second quarter of the year, with the Machinery Importers' Section leading the way.

3 - The respondents are optimistic about the fourth quarter, with orders expected to be +3.3% higher than in the 3rd period of the year; all three sections expect to see growth in business, with the Equipment Suppliers the most bullish about business levels.

"Members of the Association recorded a good level of growth over the summer," said Andrew Manly, MTA director general, "And the cumulative effect of the first three quarters of the year has already seen order intake increase by nearly 16% with the final quarter still to come.

It looks like 2006 will be a good year for the industry.".
