Responding to over 4000 enquiries from firms seeking advice during the past 12 months alone The Manufacturing Institute's chief executive Julie Madigan said: "These figures recognise the commitment of North West manufacturers to improving their performance and sustaining competitive advantage.
"These productivity improvements will continue to grow as awareness of our MAS service spreads across the region.
We will also undoubtedly be seeing significant gains through our 'Agenda for Change' programme, which will increase the numbers, scope and duration of MAS projects still further." Industry Minister, Jacqui Smith, launched the GBP 18m 'Agenda for Change' in October 2003.
The three-year action programme is designed to boost North West manufacturing productivity by a further GBP 50m and is supported by the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA).
The NWDA also appointed The Manufacturing Institute as the UK's first Regional Centre for Manufacturing Excellence (RCME) in April 2002.
The Agenda for Change programme will address key issues relating to process improvement, investment, innovation, skills development, recruitment to manufacturing, as well as helping develop a more positive image for manufacturing and the achievements of the sector in the North West.
The results reported by The Manufacturing Institute coincide with the launch this week of the second MAS annual report by DTI.
This report confirms MAS has delivered a total added value of GBP 39m to manufacturing firms in England and Wales to December 2003, compared to GBP 5m the previous year.
