Subcontractor invests in 5-axis
machining
Looking for 'one-hit', five-axis machining with high dimensional accuracy, a subcontract machine shop also sought a machining centre supplier that could offer rapid response service support.
Jefferson Engineering Services has added to its extensive 5-axis machining capabilities by investing in a 10 Pallet Matsuura MAM72-25 5-Axis High Speed machining centre The Matsuura MAM72-25 features an impressive array of 5-axis high speed machining capabilities: 20,000 rev/min spindle for high speed machining, 50m/min rapid axis traverses and scale feedback on all axes for precision, accuracy and repeatability, and the Matsuura G-Tech 30i control system for simultaneous 5-axis machining demanding complex geometry and fine surface finishing

Mill-turn centre machines six faces
A mill-turn centre differs considerably from similar products from some lathe suppliers in that it is a piece of prismatic metalcutting equipment, which has been given extensive turning capabilities.
High performance machining centre cuts 'dry'
The latest new addition to the Stama range is the MC 326, a compact machine available in single- and twin-spindle formats and offers high performance machining in dry cutting conditions.
The criteria used by Jefferson to justify this investment were all comfortably met by the Matsuura MAM72-25: high speed, 'one-hit' 5-axis machining; high precision, accuracy and repeatability to 1 micron; extended un-manned operation based on a multi-pallet and 240 tool capacity automatic tool change system; rapid response service support from Matsuura.
Jefferson is a market leader in providing high precision, complex machined components and sub-assemblies to the aerospace, defence, Formula One, medical and scientific industries.
The Matsuura MAM72-25 extends Jefferson's technological lead in the high precision 5-axis component machining sector still further.

VMC adapts to long or short components
Adaptable production capability is offered by a VMC in single- and twin-spindle variants - a long X-axis table allows long parts to be machined, or parts can be machined in 'pendelum' fashion.
In addition to its 5-axis machining technology, Jefferson invests heavily in CAD/CAM software to support its 'design-for-manufacture' and rapid prototyping capabilities.
Working directly from Catia V5 and Pro-Engineer solid models, Jefferson generates CAM and CMM programs which can be simulated to test machining efficiency and accuracy.
This capability has provided major benefits for Jefferson's customers tasked with converting from traditional casting machining to 'from solid' 5-axis machining.
Jefferson machines an extensive range of materials from aerospace-grade aluminium and stainless steel, through to titanium and other high-tensile and heat-resistant alloys.
The accuracy and repeatability of the Matsuura MAM72-25, together with its high-speed machining capabilities, has proved invaluable for reducing scrap and improving surface finishing on these expensive materials.
Jefferson has been so impressed by the capabilities of the Matsuura MAM72-25, and the support provided by Matsuura, that it is currently in negotiations for additional machine tool investments.
Jefferson have since ordered a second MAM72-25V PC10 and the machine will be installed on the 19th of December 2005.
