Melexis will be introducing a patented technology for joystick position sensing and an improved infrared thermometer at Sensor + Test 2007 this year.

Melexis, a leading supplier of automotive-dedicated semiconductor solutions, will introduce during Sensor + Test 2007 new products specified for medical applications on one hand and for industrial applications on the other hand During the 3 day exhibition the new technologies will be amplified via presentations: a patented technology for joystick position sensing next to the improved version of the infrared thermometer now suitable for high demanding medical applications

Through the MLX90333, the patented Triaxis technology shows its full potential: the 3 components of the flux density provided by a magnet attached to a joystick lever are measured at one spot.

An appropriate signal processing realises the typical transfer characteristics of a joystick and reports them on both outputs of the MLX90333.

Using the MLX90333, the electronic design of a joystick gets suddenly a straightforward venture and the designer can spend more time on the mechanical and ergonomic aspects of the unit.

For the safety and critical application controlled by a joystick, Melexis proposes the MLX90333 in the now famous full redundant (dual die) version which will fits exactly the same joystick design as the single die version.

Following the Melexis tradition, the Triaxis MLX90333 Sensor IC is fully programmable (output transfer characteristic, analog/PWM/Serial Protocol) and has all the protection features to withstand harsh conditions.

One of the most prominent applications of Infra Red thermometers has been the fever measurement of humans.

There are two main types of IR fever thermometers: the ear thermometers and forehead thermometers.

For these medical applications, a measurement accuracy of +/-0.1degC is needed.

Often such accuracy can only be achieved in small operating temperature ranges and under precisely controlled laboratory conditions.

Last year Melexis introduced the MLX90614 family of digital integrated temperature sensors.

This small and cost effective non-contact thermometer delivers a fully calibrated, digital infrared temperature reading.

An infrared sensor and a custom signal conditioning chip are integrated in one TO-can package.

Recently, Melexis enlarged the MLX90614 family with the MLX90614DAA.

This 3 Volt device delivers the +/-0.1degC measurement accuracy in the object temperature range of 36degC - 39degC and the wide ambient temperature range 20degC - 30degC.

The sleep mode option with a sleep current in the order of uA make this device highly suited for battery operated applications.

The MLX90614 family is qualified in accordance to AECQ100 and is ROHS compatible.

It can be soldered up to 260degC according to JEDEC 020C Production quantities of this high accuracy integrated thermometer are available now.

The MLX90614EAF-DAA is priced at 5.2 Euro/piece at 1,000 pieces quantity.
