Magnetically-encoded tape scale is
supple, tough

Encoder system features a supple, magnetically-encoded tape scale, which is ideal for both rotary and linear applications, including long-bed machine tools.

Newall Measurement Systems has released details of its Magnasyn encoder system featuring a supple, magnetically-encoded tape scale, which is ideal for both rotary and linear applications The ultra-flexible encoder can be mounted directly onto a variety of machine surfaces providing accurate and repeatable machine movement measurement in excessively hostile environments

The Magnasyn encoder is specifically designed to address the problem of measuring uneven or circular machine movement by featuring a flexible magnetic rubber strip, which is sandwiched between a backing strip and a thin, protective cover strip made of stainless steel.

The ingenious design is not only incredibly flexible, it can also withstand exposure to a range of aggressive elements - including dust, dirt and oil - and has received an IP67 approval rating.

The Magnasyn encoder system consists of a reading head, which can travel at speeds of up to 4m/s, and a magnetically-encoded tape, which can be extended to a length of 32m.

The reader head provides an accuracy level of +/-2 microns and +/-20 microns/m, making the system ideal for sawing, woodworking and long-bed machining.

Moreover, displaying no evidence of mechanical wear regardless of operating conditions, the Magnasyn encoder has an extremely long life span.

Differential quadrature output signals at the 5V level mean that the Magnasyn encoder can be used with control systems and PLC's as well as the Newall range of cost effective digital display units.

With a minimum tape-bending radius of 60mm and certified shock resistance up to 100g, the Magnasyn encoder is an extremely malleable measuring instrument, which suffers from none of the shortcomings associated with traditional glass encoder technology.

Bob Massam, Sales and Marketing Director at Newall, explains: "The stainless-steel and rubber composition is exceptionally tough and can withstand the type of operating conditions that most glass encoders would find difficult to contend with.

More importantly, the Magnasyn encoder can be manipulated to fit the complexity of individual machines - no matter what the application." Ideal for both OEMs and retro-fitters, the Magnasyn encoder can be easily affixed using the adhesive strip on the underside of the tape scale.

Alternatively, the scale can be fastened to an optional twin-track backing bar supported by stand-offs.

The second measuring track of the backing bar is generally used to position machine reference segments of tape, which are detected by a separate array of sensors in the sealed reading head.

The Magnasyn encoder is an ideal measuring unit for rotary and linear machine applications used in particularly harsh environments. Request a free brochure from Newall Measurement Systems ...
