A digital encoder and readout system has helped a leading UK designer and manufacturer of household and commercial security products to improve production of its new range of multi-point locks.

However, to continue ERA's ongoing policy of product development, Scott Bailey, Production Engineer at the Willenhall plant, identified potential opportunities to improve the production process and increase accuracy.
Further examinations revealed that holes designed to accommodate screws which keep the front bar and drive bar of the multi-point lock in place, were occasionally minutely out of line.
Although measuring only fractions of a millimetre, these discrepancies provided the company with the opportunity to refine its production process even further and minimise any future maintenance requirements.

Bailey double-checked the manufacturing process but found no discrepancies between the technical drawings prepared by ERA's engineering design team and the data input to the new manufacturing cell.
After further investigation, the issue was traced to the method employed to measure the accuracy of the punching.
"Once the bars had been punched, the holes were checked for positional accuracy against a fixed steel rule.
Human error was a factor and a more accurate and reliable method of measurement was required," says Bailey.
ERA contacted Newall Measurement Systems, whose Spherosyn digital encoder has been proven to help engineering companies cut costs and increase productivity in a wide range of applications.

The Spherosyn Digital encoder and readout were fixed to a platform next to the machining cell, enabling accurate measurement of the distance between the holes and easy reference to the designs.
