We want the sliding heads tomorrow

With new orders for small turned parts filling the available machine capacity, two directors bought new CNC sliding head autos 'off-the-shelf' at an open day for delivery next day - or no sale!

With new orders for small turned parts filling the available machine capacity at Unicut Precision, its two directors went along to the last day of the NC Engineering Open House at Watford and promptly ordered the demonstration Citizen L20 CNC sliding headstock machine However, there was one proviso, it had to be delivered to their Welwyn Garden City works the following day a Friday, be commissioned and in full production by Monday

Says Jason Nicholson joint managing director: "We recently won a GBP 200,000 aerospace contract from the US and further orders have just swamped our capacity for producing components up to 20mm diameter.

Even by adding a third shift, the machines are fully occupied and we have to be geared up to meet short lead times demanded by customers." The L20 brings the number of Citizen sliding head automatic lathes at Unicut to 12, all of which are under 21/2 years old and run around the clock.

As co-director Charles Kenny maintains: "We looked at competitive machines.

However, factors such as known reliability, training, common tooling, service and support and immediate delivery, meant the Citizen was the best solution to the type of problem many contract manufacturers would just love at the moment." The nine-axis L20 is the middle of the Citizen range of sliding head autos and the company's international top-selling lathe.

All servo-driven, including collet operation, it has main and sub-spindles and 16 tool capacity of which four are driven. Request a free brochure from Citizen Machinery UK ...
