Motorsport complexity demands sliding
head work

Motorsport contracts for complex single cycle high precision turn/milled components has prompted UK subcontractor to order a GBP 160,000 Citizen M32-V CNC sliding head lathe from NC Engineering.

A fast rising demand created by new motorsport contracts for complex single cycle high precision turn/milled components has prompted HPC (Services) of Ilkeston, Derbyshire to order a further Citizen M32-V CNC sliding head lathe from NC Engineering in Watford in a sale worth more than GBP 160,000 Said HPC managing director Paul Cobb: "Almost every new job we are looking at falls into the capability of the Citizen M32 where we need very high levels of quality and precision with good flexibility for setting, can arrange operations around standard tooling and generate very quick one-operation cycles

Also for around-the-clock and unmanned running, the Citizen M32 gives better control over swarf and the difference in hourly rate is easily made up against the faster cycles achieved." The new high specification machine, the tenth Citizen to be installed at Ilkeston, will feature integrated gantry unload, two Y-axis cross-feeds, one to the turret the other to the toolslide, which gives optimised cutting efficiency with three tools cutting simultaneously.

Other factors enjoyed by HPC's setters are the common structure of control software, the fast setting for tool centre height and the ability to machine quickly and simply off the centre line - a typical requirement of many of the components that will be run on the new machine.

At HPC (Services) there are two Citizen L20s, four Citizen L32 and with the new machine four, top of the range Citizen M32 machines.

The last M32 was only installed in October, following delivery and commissioning in 10 days of order against a massive contract for complex stainless steel body components.

Commenting on the number of machines from the same supplier, Cobb insists it makes the setters task easier due to familiarity with control software and common tooling arrangements which is very important when very complex cycles are being put together.

"We get a high standard of service and support from NC Engineering so why change and risk being let down," he insisted. Request a free brochure from Citizen Machinery UK ...
