When Target Sports bought its first Citizen B12 Type V, CNC sliding headstock lathe, it wanted to machine high quality brass dart bodies - it was quickly followed by a second machine.
Citizen told manufacturingtalk that initially orders were expected from the subcontract sector but the level of potential projects from OEMs, who were using the show to prepare investment budgets into 2009, gave Citizen confidence in longer term sales success.
Citizen Machinery UK's managing director, Geoff Bryant, said the MACH 2008 show was best ever in 32 years of attending exhibitions.
He said: "We took 20 orders on the stand over the week which endorses the wide acceptance of sliding head CNC technology as offering the lowest part manufacturing cost for combined operations on bar material up to 32mm dia." Bryant added: "Last year we set a record in the UK of 100 Citizen machines installed.

After such a bumper year, 2008 started cautiously as some customers waited to way up the technology options at the show.
Then the initial continuous stream of visitors to the stand almost ended up as a flood that has reflected in an order book bonanza worth more than GBP 2 million as the week progressed." * Fastest 32mm CNC sliding head automatic lathe - The first international order for the world?s fastest 32mm capacity CNC sliding head auto was placed on Citizen Machinery UK by Unicut Precision of Welwyn Garden City during the MACH 2008 exhibition at the NEC.
The order worth some GBP 220,000, was for two A32-VII machines and was placed by the two joint managing directors of Unicut Precision, Charles Kenny and Jason Nicholson.
The total number of Citizen machines installed at the precision subcontractor?s 18,000ft2 machine shop is now 25.
Commenting on the order against the pre-production machine making its world debut on the Citizen Machinery UK stand at MACH 2008, Kenny said: ?The A32 specification will give us an improvement of at least 40 per cent in productivity on the specific contracts we have in mind".
Nicholson added: ?The potential return on the investment made the decision to purchase a low risk.
From our previous experiences, we know Citizen will not let us down when the production machines are installed and with this level of productivity improvement, we are looking at the new machines almost performing the work of three existing machines".
* larger premises - Unicut Precision recently increased its premises at Welwyn Garden City by 40% as a reaction to a sales growth of 12% in 2007.
In a new bay, two Citizen K16 machines were installed in January and sited alongside two further K16 machines ordered at the last year's EMO exhibition in Hannover.
About the UK's credit squeeze Nicholson said it had not influenced the company's expansion plans.
The movement of Euro against sterling had already drawn significant enquires and brought Unicut orders for some very advanced components.
He added: "The Citizen A32?s will free up capacity on our high specification Citizen M32 machines which will then be used for new and more complex work on difficult materials involving lots of driven tool milling".
* High pressure coolant systems - the Citizen A32-Vll sliding head autos ordered are full specification machines with live tooling, Cool Blaster 2,000 lb/in2 high pressure coolant systems, 3m bar feed and Absolent mist extraction.
The heavy duty Citizen A32-VII has a 32mm bar capacity by 320mm machining length and is powered by 7.5kW main and 3.7kW sub spindle.
Up to 27 tools can be carried on the Unicut Precision machines as the directors have taken advantage of the option packages with driven tools powered by 1kW motors.
The rapid traverse rate is 45m/min more than double the previous 32mm capacity Citizen machines.
The Citizen Streamline software running on Mitsubishi control hardware allows overlapped cycles to be performed.
Smoother movements are ensured and any idle times considerably shortened, which are all factors Unicut are keen to exploit for increased productivity. Request free introductory details about products from Citizen Machinery UK ...
