5-axis VMC's rotary movements are more
rigid
Speed, accuracy and repeatability of the rotary axes of a fully interpolative 5-axis VMC are substantial elements providing much greater rigidity than previously available 'add-ons'.
Fully interpolative, 5-axis CNC machining is becoming increasingly popular for the production of ever more complex components in a single clamping, due to its advantages in terms of higher accuracy, shorter machining times and lower production costs Aimed at this market, which has long since progressed from the traditional strongholds of mould / die and aerospace into general engineering, is the new Okuma MU-400VA vertical machining centre (VMC) from Japan, available in the UK through sole agent, NCMT

HUD chassis lead-time cut by more than one half
The lead time for machining a head-up display (HUD) chassis has been reduced from 53 days to 20 by Thales Optics after installing an Okuma MA50 half-metre-cube, horizontal machining centre.
Getting gear blanks round and parallel
For successful gear manufacture, roundness and parallelism have to be very accurate, which is why motor sport gearbox maker, XTRAC, acquired Okuma CNC lathes for gear blank machining.
The design is based on a fully integrated trunnion swivelling horizontally through +20 / -100 degrees and carrying a 360 degree rotary table, respectively adding A and C axes to an X,Y,Z envelope of 762mm X 460mm X 460mm.
Maximum weight of component that can be supported is 300 kg.
What sets this machine apart from most is the speed, accuracy and repeatability of the rotary axes, these being substantial elements providing much greater rigidity than previously available add-ons.
The new Okuma VMC boasts 240 degrees/sec trunnion swivel and 300 degrees/sec table rotation with indexing accuracy and repeatability in both axes of +/-4 seconds of arc and +/-1 second of arc respectively.
Speed of operation extends to the linear axes, with 40m/min rapid traverse of the trunnion / rotary table assembly in X and Y.
Vertical rapid traverse of the spindle in Z is 32m/min, the latter speed also being the maximum cutting feed rate throughout the working volume.
Maximum spindle speed options are 8,000, 15,000 or 25,000 rev, delivered by an 11kW motor, and there is also a choice of magazine capacity of 20- or 32-stations for BT40 taper tools.
Automatic tool change time is fast at 1.2 seconds. Request a free brochure from NCMT ...
