New low-cost lathe from Okuma
Okuma has introduced a 2-axis CNC turning machine, called Soarer L270E, which is the first of a new range from the Japanese manufacturer built to in-house standards under contract in Taiwan.
A high rigidity mill-turning spindle under X, Z, Y and B-axis control occupies the upper turret position.
Its 7.5/5.5kW motor offers speeds up to 6,000 rpm with 12,000 rpm available as an option.
Through-tool coolant is standard and BT40 BIG Plus tools are loaded from a separate NC controlled chain-type magazine with optional capacity for up to 120 tools.
In standard form the machine is equipped with a programmable tailstock, allowing components up to 1,625 mm length to be machined.
Alternatively a 11/7.5kW, 6,000 rpm sub spindle is available, as is a 12-station VDI lower turret.
These maximise the flexibility and productivity of the machine.
Axis travels for the upper turret are 505mm in X, 1670mm in Z and +/-95mm in Y.
The lower turret can also turn along the entire length of the part.
C-axis positioning on the main spindle is in 0.001 degree increments while the B-axis can be positioned in 1 degree increments as standard, with 0.001 degree incremental positioning as an option.
Rapid traverse rates are 30m/min in X, 26m/min in Y and 40m/min in Z.
Machine control is by Okuma's latest proprietary OSP-E100L CNC system, which incorporates browser terminal facilities to disseminate and collect job-related information without the need for separate shop floor computer terminals.
Interconnection within a factory intranet allows paperless communication with other departments such as sales and production management, providing cost, delivery, quality and other data for analysis.
In addition to local data communication, the possibility exists for modem connection to an Okuma service centre to access on-line diagnostic services.
The control contains production engineering knowledge that maximises productivity by proposing an optimum machining program as well as cutting parameters and tools to suit the material and job.
The clarity of 3D simulation available on screen now approaches that of CAD/CAM systems.
