Toolmaker adds on spindles and factory
management
Toolholding product manufacturer that introduced a limited range of specialist cutting tools has diversified again into air turbine spindles and factory management software.
Toolholding product manufacturer, BIG Daishowa Seiki, which recently introduced a limited range of specialist cutting tools for end milling, chamfering and spot drilling, has diversified again into two new areas - air turbine spindles and factory management software Both will be launched at EMO 2003

HUD chassis lead-time cut by more than one half
The lead time for machining a head-up display (HUD) chassis has been reduced from 53 days to 20 by Thales Optics after installing an Okuma MA50 half-metre-cube, horizontal machining centre.
Getting gear blanks round and parallel
For successful gear manufacture, roundness and parallelism have to be very accurate, which is why motor sport gearbox maker, XTRAC, acquired Okuma CNC lathes for gear blank machining.
Air turbine spindles - capable of running at up to 80,000 rpm and with automatic tool change capability, BIG's new 'RBX' air turbine spindle is designed for micro-machining with cutting tools up to 1 mm diameter, as will be demonstrated at the show.
They are ideal for machining complex and finely detailed moulds that would normally require EDM to complete.
Other applications will be found in the electronics industry, such as for drilling printed circuit boards.

Rotary coolant adapter avoids bearing wear

New low-cost lathe from Okuma
Okuma has introduced a 2-axis CNC turning machine, called Soarer L270E, which is the first of a new range from the Japanese manufacturer built to in-house standards under contract in Taiwan.

Factory Manager software - developed within BIG's own plant in Japan, the company's factory management software has been simplified for sale to other firms wishing to control all the technical functions around their machine tools, as distinct from production management functions which are already ably looked after by other software packages on the market.
The aim of the new PC-based package, designated FM-LT, is to reduce set-up times and administrative costs by having all engineering information readily available - lists of tooling, jigs and fixtures, gauges, etc - without having to scour the shop floor.
All the know-how for setting up a particular job is built up the first time it is undertaken.
The resulting database of production information ensures that the knowledge is not lost if a different operator runs the job next time.
In other words, the experience of the original setter is passed on and the information can be added to by the next person so that the system learns as time progresses.
Other useful features include a bar code reader for rapid data input; and on-screen display of drawings, photographs and even videos to assist the setter.
Within the scope of the system is NC program administration, from confirmation and off-line editing of part programs to their upload and download to and from machine tools, together with tool offset values.
The system is expandable from one PC to full network control.
Tool-to-web communication - continuing the theme of electronic help for the customer, BIG has started to build into its new products a chip giving users convenient connection to the BIG web site, where all information essential to that tool's efficient use on the shop floor may be accessed.
Up-to-date product information together with recommended feeds and speeds for different cutting conditions are available instantly, without having to hunt down the appropriate literature in the factory.
CAPTO turning tools - following its cross license agreement with Sandvik, BIG introduced at the last EMO a range of BIG Coromant Capto toolholders for live machining applications on mill-turn centres.
This year's show will see the introduction of toolholders for static lathe tooling, allowing turning and boring operations to be carried out.
BIG Coromant Capto provides a dual contact spindle interface utilising polygonal taper and flange face.
Repeatability of the centre height of the cutting edge is improved for accurate turning.
The solid taper provides increased rigidity against deflection when compared to hollow taper shanks such as HSK. Request a free brochure from NCMT ...
