A new, horizontal-spindle machining centre with fully enclosed twin pallet changer has been introduced by the Japanese manufacturer, Okuma, offering rapid traverse and cutting feed rates of 90m/min in all linear axes as an option to the standard 60 m/min.

Acceleration to these speeds is 1G, resulting in short positioning times and hence high productivity.

Sole UK agent, NCMT, says that the machine, designated MB-500H, is ideal for producing automotive components in large volumes within a working envelope of 800 mm3, while aerospace applications are another target area.

The 500 mm2 pallet is mounted on a rotary table that moves in 1-degree increments, although a full fourth axis may be specified with 0.001 degree indexing.

Rotation through 90 degrees takes just 1.5 seconds and automatic pallet change is also fast at 7 seconds.

Speed of the 40-taper spindle is programmable in the range 50 to 15,000 rpm and delivers 18.5kW of continuous power, or 22kW for 10 minutes.

The optional 20,000 rpm spindle motor is rated at 26kW, 30kW (10 min).

Tool magazine capacity is 40, although it is possible to have 60 or 118 positions, maximum tool diameter being 75mm, or 145mm with adjacent pockets empty.

The use of cooled ballscrews throughout and a rigid bed with three-point support promote high accuracy of machined finish.

Installed weight of the machine is 11 tonnes yet the footprint measures a compact 2.8 x 4.9 metres.

Further options are linear scales in X, Y and Z, a six-pallet pool, various extra coolant configurations, tool management and breakage detection, and an internal chip conveyor.
