End mill can ramp and perform helical cutting
End mill range now has tools capable of multi-functional metalcutting including ramping, helical milling, shoulder milling and peck drilling - also six insert grades cover a wide range of metals.
BIG Daishowa Seiki, Japan, has expanded its FullCut end mill range with the addition of versions capable of multi-functional metalcutting including ramping, helical milling, shoulder milling and peck drilling.
Designated FCR, the tools are available through UK agent, NCMT.
When launched in 2001, FCM-type FullCut end mills for slot and square shoulder milling were the first to combine the economy of indexable inserts with eccentric relief of the cutting edge, normally found on solid carbide cutters.
This had the effect of improving the toughness of the edge without reducing its sharpness, which results from having a high positive rake angle in both the radial and axial directions.
Further advantages were reduced noise in operation as well as low cutting resistance, so the tool is both productive and accurate when used on less rigid milling machines and machining centres.
Users of the new FCR-type FullCut mills will enjoy the same benefits, but across a wider spectrum of machining operations.
Ramping, i e, increasing the tool's depth of cut as it traverses, is becoming increasingly important for producing pockets and holes in a component, especially in the die and mould and aerospace sectors.
The technique allows the higher speeds and precise interpolation capabilities of modern machining centres to be exploited, reducing cycle times and the number of cutters needed.
Six FCR insert grades are available for efficient machining of almost any material, from highly alloyed steels to aluminium.
Maximum cutting speed (vc) is 1,500m/min and feed per tooth (fz) is up to 0.25mm.

The smallest diameter cutter takes two inserts while all others require three.
Tool length from the gauge line is up to 135mm.
FullCut mills have spiral chip pockets for high rigidity.
Dry cutting is normally recommended although through-holes are provided for applications where a built-up edge dictates the use of soluble oil coolant.
Secure clamping of inserts with the patented, high tensile steel 'Alpha Screw' system together with maximum support under the insert are further features.
