Increase productivity from existing machines

A Nikken Kosakusho UK product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Aug 28, 2002

If UK manufacturing companies are keen to increase productivity and output, they must move away from age-old methods and processes in work- and tool- holding when using metal cutting machine tools.

Nikken are confident that in today's volatile economic climate, UK manufacturing companies are keen to increase productivity and output moving away from age-old methods and processes.

Higher productivity from existing machines means larger profits and can negate the need for investment in new machinery.

Most companies that Nikken work with don't appreciate the full capability of their current plant - nor what is new on the market.

Who are Nikken? Nikken Kosakusho (UK) is a subsidiary of Nikken Works, Japan.

Its principal activities are the import, distribution and supply of CNC rotary and tilting tables (4th and 5th axes), high performance CNC tooling systems and measuring devices.

Nikken Works in Japan annually produces some 300,000 tool holders, 2500 CNC rotary tables and 250,000 reamers.

It employs a global workforce in excess of 550 and has earned a reputation for producing quality products and demonstrating total commitment to its clients.

Nikken currently support industries such as F1, Automotive, Turbine Blade and Aerospace Manufacture.

Already, by incorporating Nikken's expertise into their production, key companies throughout Europe (and the world) are benefiting from the sales and support package that Nikken offer.

Twice as Deep - Twice as Fast!! Quite a bold statement! Recently with the new 3-LOCK Tool System, trials were undertaken with the next generation BT spindle called MBT.

The results produced cutting capabilities over and above that of standard BT type tooling - twice the depth and speed on both Titanium and Steel (EN8) with further increases found on Aluminium.

The system also drew less power from the machine spindle than standard BT tooling and more recent results have shown significant improvements to tool life.

So what is the Key? Its simple! The better the tool fits into the machine spindle, the better the performance of the tool.

Nikken products have better taper contact than most systems, higher accuracy, and higher gripping power.

This allows the user to take bigger cuts, faster - which ultimately means more profit! Save on Setting Time.

Research has shown that in some cases, 25% of the cost of manufacturing a component can be lost in setting up the individual operations.

By adding an additional axis or axes to a machining center the number of set-ups required can be dramatically reduced.

For example, a typical aerospace fitting can be machined complete in two operations, where conventially this would take five or six operations.

This technique not only saves time, it eliminates any human error.

How? Nikken UK has a philosophy of 'total commitment'.

The Euro Centre exists to support this goal and offers an open door policy.

Within the technical showroom, investment has been made in a new 'multi-media' training suite, a new five axis-machining centre and a co-ordinate measuring machine.

These facilities will be used to increase customer awareness and also to further develop Nikken's tooling systems and accessories.

Training.

Also available now, at the Rotherham based 'Euro Centre', Nikken are running training courses to demonstrate how to optimise machine tool Performance and Production.

These are tailor made to suit operatives, supervision and strategy managers.
