Video measuring reduces mould inspection time

A Nikon UK product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Sep 5, 2005

Speed and precision of a video measuring system allowed mould maker to reduce its inspection time and 'free-up' the 'first off' inspection checks.

To help accelerate the research and development of new plastic injection moulding tooling for its next generation of speciality medical devices, Bespak has installed a NEXIV VMR video measuring system Located at the company's King's Lynn (Norfolk, UK) manufacturing plant, the NEXIV 6555 is already providing invaluable data in Bespak's quest to ensure tolerances down to +/-0.001mm are met for a variety of crucial components.

According to Terry Widdison, the Process Engineering Manager, "At these tolerances, the repeatability and reproducibility of the data is absolutely vital, no matter who loads and examines the samples".

"With the arrival of the NEXIV we can obtain the reliable information we need to secure rapid approval of new injection moulding tools from both our own internal teams and the companies who rely on us to develop their new products." On average, the NEXIV makes around 900 measurements a day on batches of 64 samples taken from 15 different production lines.

"Its speed and precision has not only allowed us to reduce our inspection time but also frees-up our 'First Off' inspection checks to concentrate on the 200 million plus routine components we produce each year." Bespak, one of Europe's leading manufacturers of speciality medical devices, also uses a Nikon NEXIV at its Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire, UK) production facility to perform regular QC checks on its components.
