A part of Gulmay Medical's Xstrahl 100 X-Ray Therapy equipment has used a fastening from Norse Precision Castings that employs magnets embedded into the cold poured rigid polyurethane.

A novel fastening was used by Norse Precision Castings of Bedford on a part of Gulmay Medical's Xstrahl 100 X-Ray Therapy equipment It uses magnets embedded into the cold poured rigid polyurethane to hold two parts of the enclosure, the second part incorporating a steel ring

The parts require regular three monthly seperation for maintenance and a smooth joint was advantageous for operational detail and aesthetics.

Gulmay Medical, leading manufacturer of low energy X-Ray therapy equipment, took advantage of the team experience at Norse Precision Castings to achieve optimum functional, stylistic and economic design of the housings with a combination of metal and plastic components.

The metal is sand cast aluminium, the 'plastic' rigid polyurethane cold poured, having the unique property of preserving the characteristics of embedded components.

'Time to market' and cost of tooling, where moulds are economic in small batch production, all played a part in the choice of materials and processes.

With a constant eye on future technologies, particularly on aspects affecting such as modelling, Norse Precision Castings recently sourced three dimensional models built up from powder deposition, structured from electronically generated models.

When strengthened with an epoxy coating these can be used in either the sand casting or rigid polyurethane moulding with the real advantage of high accuracy prototypes and very short 'lead times'.

A close working relationship with such specialised sources, whose wide experience of model design complements the Norse Precision in-house capabilities to realise an enviable record of 'right first time' in rapid prototyping.
