CAD/CAM ups programming times 20-40%
Formula One engineer reported improved programming times of between 20-40%, while adding a 34% productivity improvement to machine cycle time at a recent Open Mind seminar.
The recent DMG Open House at the company's UK headquarters in Luton proved a resounding success not only for DMG but also its technology partners, Seco, Renishaw and Open Mind.
With over 250 visitors at the four day event, a considerable level of business was conducted.
The event kicked off to an exceptional start with Open Mind holding its customer seminar program.
Conducting a customer seminar was an engineer from the UK's leading F1 team in the 2007 championship.
The engineer told delegates that the F1 team programmed its first part using its recently installed Open Mind hyperMill package in the same time as its previous CAD/CAM package.
An impressive start considering the engineers were on a learning curve.
The improved programming times are anticipated to be between 20-40%.
Added to this is a 34% productivity improvement to machine cycle time, which is a credit to the hyperMill's cutter path selection.
The F1 team is also delighted with hyperMill's sympathetic approach to tool path selection that significantly improves tool life.
The team now uses one cutter to rough and finish machine a component as opposed to using a number of tools.
Now, up to eight parts can be completed with one cutter in some instances.
hyperMill has also improved component surface finishes for the team.
The speaker informed delegates that senior management was so impressed with surface finishes they requested all internal parts to be re-machined with hyperMill.
Visitors invited to the Open House by Open Mind were thoroughly impressed with the presentations, the opportunity to discuss issues with industry leading engineers and the chance to view complimentary market leading innovations from DMG, Seco and Renishaw.
The hosts of the Open House, DMG were delighted with the success of the event and especially the contribution of Open Mind.
DMG UK managing director Tim Hately commented: "The four day event has been a great success for all parties involved with a high level of visitor numbers.
With events like this, we encourage our technology partners to take part as there is crossover between our customers that helps all parties involved.
However, we like to work with proactive companies that are intent on building successful relationships and Open Mind has immediately demonstrated this with their first day contribution." Hately concluded: "The Open Mind user meeting generated a lot of interest and their proactive approach has cemented relationships between the companies at all levels.
The applications engineers of both DMG and Open Mind work very closely and this event has highlighted this fact." Commenting on the event, Open Mind Sales and Marketing Director Mr Richard Nolan stated: "We were delighted with the turnout.
Day one delegates all left with an education in world class machining strategies whilst visitors on day's two to four had an opportunity to see the latest innovations and benefits of the hyperMill package.
Not only did visitors see the benefits of hyperMill but they also had the chance to watch the package working in conjunction with market leading machines and cutting tools.".
