CAM software is true five-axis for milling
During 2000, Open Mind introduced what was billed as the first true 5-axis CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software for CNC milling.
Of significance to UK customers was the agreement between Open Mind UK and Agie-Charmilles to sign a "Five Drive" agreement.
The "Five Drive" agreement is an initiative to increase the awareness of 5-axis machining in the UK.
The collaboration follows over four years of close co-operation that has noted Open Mind developing dedicated post processors for Agie-Charmilles machine tools.

Millennium Angel made with high-tech CAM approach
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software company, Open Mind, has assisted in creating a two metre high representation of Icarus, called the Millennium Angel.
As Richard Nolan, Open Mind Sales and Marketing Director comments: "Agie-Charmilles has a 5-axis competence centre where we can take potential users and show them the capabilities of both machine and CAM package working in unison.
Unlike other post processors, a dedicated version delivers unrivalled speed and efficiency and ease of use to match.
Since 2003 we have seen an increase to 95% of all customers requiring 5-axis solutions.
With a competence centre supporting this agreement we can show serious 5-axis machining prospects the best available solutions on the market." As well as the significant agreement with Agie-Charmilles, Open Mind gave visitors to the stand at EMO an opportunity to gain live experience of trend-setting CAM technologies and applications.
The company exhibited all the different features of their latest product developments including strategies for complete machining in a single setup and intelligent technologies for completely automated programming.
The capabilities of the products were highlighted with numerous live demonstrations of workpieces programmed using Hypermill.
These demonstrations took place on the Open Mind stand as well as on the stands of the various machine tool partners.
Visitors to the trade fair gained a practical and comprehensive picture of the features and capabilities offered by the company's Hypermill CAM software.
Customers and visitors to the Open Mind stand had the chance to see the new Version 9.6 Hypermill Millturn module for milling/turning.
It allows the end user to conduct complete machining on milling and turning centres using only one CAM application possible for the first time.
The ability to accurately manufacture complex parts in a single setup to and reduced set-up times has brought considerable demand for the mill/turn module that has been seamlessly integrated into Hypermill.
Users can switch between turning and milling strategies at any time whilst they are programming.
The tool database, automatic stock tracking, stock management and collision control are available for all turning and milling strategies.
A mill/turn postprocessor ensures that a complete NC file is produced.
Ultimately, it is only possible to tell how good CAM strategies and programs are by using them on an actual machining job.
To prove the capabilities of the new development at EMO, Open Mind gave numerous live demonstrations that were appreciated by the crowds on the stand.
The new Version V9.7 was presented to visitors for the first time at EMO and it was the major highlight of the show for all SolidWorks users.
It includes the new CAD integration of Hypermill in SolidWorks.
This integration allows users to work with Hypermill in their familiar SolidWorks environment.
This is an ideal solution for continuous CAD/CAM processes that access one database for programming in a familiar operating environment.
Also capable of supporting Windows Vista, Version V9.7 was a huge hit with visitors to the stand.
