Orbital TIG supplier helps fabricator meet EU regs

An Orbimatic product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Nov 11, 2005

Orbital TIG welding equipment supplier has assisted a leading manufacture of oil-fired boilers in the manufacture of condensing units, to help them comply with new European legislation.

Orbimatic (UK) Limited, the manufacturer of technology leading Orbital TIG Welding equipment have assisted a leading manufacture of oil-fired boilers in the manufacture of condensing units, to help them comply with new European legislation.

Orbimatic have supplied a welding package comprising an Orbimat 165CB orbital welding power supply and P24 enclosed tubesheet weld head.

Orbimatic's P24 weld head has been designed to enable the welding of thin walled stainless steel boiler tubes fitted to tube sheets in heat exchangers.

The P24 allows this task to be carried out using a precision Orbital Welding Power Supply, such as the Orbimat 165CB.

This means that not only is the rotation of the torch consistent, but the delivery of the welding current is also kept constant and can be varied around the circumference of the tube.

Allowing the heat input to be reduced as heat builds up in the tube sheet.

The heads are controlled with closed loop servos and parameters are monitored 500 times per second to provide a precise and accurate control of the weld profile.

It can be used for tubes which are flush, receded or protruding from the tube plate and the tungsten can be angled to suit the specific application it is being used for.

Tubes from 10mm to 26mm OD can be welded with completely repeatable results.

Because the welding arc is contained in an enclosed chamber which is filled with inert gas the P24 can be used to weld stainless steel, nickel alloys and titanium tubes.

The P24 is ideal for condensed heat exchange units as it is very compact and weighs only 1.2kg.

The P24 is located on the ID of the tube being welded with a mandrel which centres in the tube via a range of sprung ball bearing.

This makes loading and unloading of the weld head very quick for maximum efficiency.

The introduction of the Orbimatic welding system has seen the production levels double and production levels can be further maximised in the future with the use of two Orbimat-C Power Supplies fitted with Orbitwin dual weld head switching units and two weld heads.

This allows one operator to operate four welds and ensure that each system is welding constantly.
