Brushless motors solve space problems
Further improvements into variants within a range of brushless motors bring a significant size advantage over conventional speed controlled AC motors, says the supplier.
Oriental Motor, Japan's largest manufacturer of Stepper and AC motors, has introduced further improvements into variants within its popular Vexta range of brushless motors.
The improvements will have major performance and integration implications for the multitude of applications that this range serves.
The company's brushless range includes four variants of velocity controlled, constant torque units: the FBL, HBL, AXU and AXH models.
As well as a speed range of between 0.8 and 3,000 rev/min, they offer a significant size advantage over conventional speed controlled AC motors.
A 90W brushless motor is just 57mm long; in comparison, a 60W AC speed-controlled motor is 150mm long.
Mark Checkley, sales manager at Oriental Motor, tells us: "In many situations, especially those where space is a constraint, it is preferable to use a brushless motor with its controller over an AC motor with an inverter.
If we take the AXH series as an example, the driver alone can offer 60% space saving on our previous model." Improvements to the range include an increased IP rating for the AXU and AXH range.
"Beforehand these were rated at IP40," explains Checkley.
"However, with the introduction of a new sealed motor casing and the conversion from ribbon cable to a cabtyre-type cable we are able to rate them at IP65." The rated speed has also been increased thanks to in-application proving.
The AXH range has also seen two new additions.
Originally only available in 30 and 50W versions a 15W variant has been added within a NEMA 17 stepper size frame; a 100W version completes the range.
All of the motors are remarkably simple to set up and use.
It really is a case of plug-and-play.
All the user has to do is connect the motor to its associated driver, switch it on and it is ready to go.
Like for like, the range also offers lower total cost of ownership compared to its alternatives.
