Orion Packaging Systems, the UK's leading manufacturer of stretch wrapping equipment, has secured a significant new contract with a major manufacturer of bespoke staircases.

Pear Stairs of Welshpool, Powys, produces 'built to order' staircases in various types of timber, which are supplied primarily to builders' merchants and housebuilders The journey of each staircase to its final destination can be hundreds of miles and given the importance of it arriving in pristine condition ready for installation, correct protection before despatch is of paramount importance

This is particularly so given that in many cases they are moved by forklift truck or stored on building sites before fitting and therefore need to be protected from both machinery and the elements.

Previously, staff at Pear Stairs were surrounding the products with bubble wrap and then stretch wrapping the staircases by hand.

However, the hand stretch wrapping process was not only slow, but entailed a significant amount of manual handling to ensure they were completely covered in wrap.

Given the size of the products - the staircases come in sections of up to 2.5 metres long - this was far from desirable and had the potential to impact on wrapping quality.

Company bosses took the decision to automate, and having undertaken some research, contacted Orion who recommended a semi-automatic orbital wrapper.

The machine supplied was an HRW145S which has been pit-mounted to allow wrapping to take place at floor level, with goods able to be placed onto the conveyor without manual handling difficulty.

It can accommodate product of up to 1450mm diagonally.

Orion has provided training for Pear Stairs staff and is also providing all consumables, as well as ongoing maintenance and servicing.

Clive McNamee, who manages the Welshpool facility for Pear Stairs, explained: "It was clear that we could not continue to wrap by hand given the increased throughput at the factory.

We were highly impressed by Orion and the way they explained how they could meet our requirements - they didn't try to sell us a machine that did more than what we needed or a product 'off the shelf'." "The pit mounting is ideal as we have reduced manual handling to a minimum and the installation has created an additional benefit - we have actually reduced the overall number of packs we send out, as we can create larger packs containing more components, reducing the potential for loss en route.

Not only has staff time been freed up, our packs now look a lot more professional and are better protected when they leave us." Walter Williams, Managing Director of Orion Packaging Systems (UK) , added: "Orbital wrapping is well-known as being ideal for applications where products of irregular size, shape and length have to be wrapped, and this is an excellent example of the benefits it can bring.

"Indeed, providing they can fit through the machine, an orbital wrapper can cope with products of almost unlimited length.".
