Iranian producer invests in O2-free copper rod
Outokumpu is to deliver a 16,000 tonnes/year Upcast continuous casting system to the Iranian copper producer Copper World so it can produce oxygen-free copper rod.
Outokumpu is to deliver a 16,000 tonnes/year Upcast continuous casting system to the Iranian copper producer Copper World.
The contract was finalized during the Wire 2004 show in Dusseldorf, and the plant is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2004.
Previously Copper World had already installed a 36,000 tonnes/year rod production plant by Continuus Properzi with one refinery furnace for recycling copper (F.R.H.C) and one shaft furnace for ETP copper rod.
"We are already a copper rod producer so we are familiar with the processes and equipment available.
We now wanted to include oxygen-free rod into our production program and range of products, while also continuing to produce F.R.H.C and ETP rod with our existing equipment.
We chose Outokumpu and Upcast technology simply because we are convinced it will bring us the best return on our investment", says the managing director of Copper World Ahmad Orouji.
Prior to making the final decision, representatives of Copper World had visited the production facilities of other producers operating similar Upcast systems.
The plant will be designed to produce 8mm oxygen-free copper wire rod and features separate melting and holding furnaces, which ensures most efficient melting of raw materials and a consistently low level of oxygen in the copper.
Also, the latest developments in Upcast technology, such as redesigned die coolers and a new casting program for the computer controlled casting machine, will be included to the delivery to Copper World.
Outokumpu is the world's second largest copper semiproducts manufacturer, and Upcast is one of its trademark technologies and a world market leader in continuous casting systems for oxygen-free copper and copper alloy wire rods.
Over 140 Upcast units have been delivered since 1971, including those for Outokumpus own production units.
Typical production capacities range between 2,000 and 30,000 tonnes/year.
