New cathode charging systems for Upcast systems
Outokumpu has introduced new cathode charging systems for the whole range of Upcast continuous casting systems for oxygen-free copper rod.
Outokumpu has introduced new cathode charging systems for the whole range of Upcast continuous casting systems for oxygen-free copper rod.
Emphasis has been put on the fact that nowadays cathode sizes and types may vary significantly depending on the cathode production method, and it is not uncommon for a producer to use both 50kg and 150 kg cathodes in the rod production system.
Also the surfaces and shapes of the cathodes may vary.
New simple, reliable, automatic cathode feeders to manage all cathode sizes and production capacities have recently been introduced.
The new, automatic cathode charging system for single-furnace operations was presented during the Upcast Users Meeting, which was held last September in Pori, Finland.
The compact and practical charger can be used to feed any sizes of cathodes into the charging/melting side of the combined melting/casting furnace of the system.
Its operation is based on vacuum-suction and simple movements, and offers a low-cost option for automating both existing Upcast and new deliveries of the system.
The charger can also be used to feed larger capacities, when needed, for example when a single-furnace system is expanded into a larger capacity two-furnace system with separate melting and holding furnaces.
High-quality oxygen-free copper rod can be produced with the Upcast system in a single-furnace operation up to a capacity of 8,000 TPA.
Designed specially for larger capacities in the range of 20,000 TPA and higher, a new cathode charger can handle any sizes of cathodes and at any charging rate chosen by the producer.
The swift, PLC-controlled movements of this particular type of charger enable feeding even a 30,000 TPA plant running at full production even with the smallest-size commercially available cathodes, still leaving enough time for melting and oxygen removal from the melt between charging cycles, an important aspect when producing oxygen-free copper rod.
New Upcast units being delivered include not only a version of the new cathode charger, but also redesigned die coolers and casting machine software.
The latter developments have shown to give to wire and cable producers an added benefit of increased wire drawability, and consequently, higher productivity of the wire plant.
