Outokumpu has recently negotiated a contract to supply a 15,000 tonnes/year Upcast continuous casting system to KGHM Polska Miedz in Poland.

KGHM is the largest copper producer in Europe and the seventh largest copper producer in the world.

The main products of KGHM are refined cathode copper, copper wire rod, round copper billets and refined silver. The Polish group is already now one of the most important copper rod suppliers in Europe with an output exceeding 200,000 tonnes/year with its Contirod system.

The 15,000 tonnes/year Upcast system will completent the product range of the company by addition of 8mm oxygen-free wire rods, thus helping KGHM to broaden their offering to meet the needs of its wide customer base in the central and eastern Europe.

The Upcast unit will be delivered by the end of 2005 and features separate melting and holding furnaces run by a PLC-controlled automatic melt transfer system, thus optimising the performance of the furnace system from both energy efficiency and melt quality points of view.

The casting machine will be equipped with totally redesigned die coolers and an enhanced rod withdrawal control for increased rod quality.

Outokumpu and KGHM enjoy a long and well-established relationship which began already in the 1970s when Outokumpu supplied the flash smelting process for the direct conversion of copper concentrate into blister copper at the Glokow plant.

Later Outokumpu has supplied various other technologies for the primary metals processing plants of KGHM at both its Glokow and Legnica plants.
