Edgecam chosen for high performance transmission
Faced with an ever-increasing demand for more complex machined surfaces, motor sports supplier, Hewland Engineering, has invested in Pathtrace's Edgecam system.
EdgeCAM DNC is made up of three products offering Machine Tool Communications, Data Management and Machine Tool Monitoring.
At the heart of the product is EdgeCAM DiB, DNC in the Box, a dedicated hardware device handling all RS232 communication with the machine tool.
This is located on the machine tool and connects to the Ethernet network either through wireless protocol or through the standard ethernet cable.

Edgecam sets program developments for 2000
A major development in the Edgecam portfolio is the launch of 'Solid Machinist' which will enable uses to directly machine Parasolid models inside the off-line programming software.
Directly machine Parasolid design models
EdgeCAM Solid Machinist for Parasolid from Pathtrace allows users to directly machine Parasolid design models such as Solid Edge, SolidWorks and other leading CAD systems
The unique approach of EdgeCAM DNC eliminates the need for specific DNC software on the PC and, by using TCP/IP standards, data transmission errors are eliminated.
The use of Ethernet technology means that distance from the PC is no longer an issue.
Once set up, EdgeCAM DiB automatically recognises uploads and downloads and delivers the NC programs in the right format, at the fastest supported transmission speed to the target NC control.
EdgeCAM DNC5000 is a data management application which removes the need for manual revision management.
The application monitors all program communications in and out of the PC, and automatically handles file versioning, access and placement.
Other files associated with the CNC program can also be managed with EdgeCAM DNC5000 including setup sheets, tool presets, drawings and digital images.
Completing the EdgeCAM DNC product range is EdgeCAM MTM, a network based machine tool monitoring system that tracks the status (such as start and stop of cycle) of machine tools and automatically records changes in status.
A wide variety of information is collected automatically with the option to collect additional information through use of other devices such as bar barcode readers.
A wide range of graphical reports including Pie and Gantt charts are available to show activity on each cell or individual machine with the option to export to Excel to allow custom reports to be created.
Raf Lobato, Pathtrace UK Operations director comments: "Our next generation DNC products are designed to meet the needs of our customers' machine shops both today and in the future.
The use of Ethernet technology is attractive as it provides robust reliable file transfer and over longer distances than traditional RS232 based solutions, while the option of secure wireless transfer provides exceptional convenience especially in cases where machine tools are being added or being moved.".
