A contract water jet cutting service is capable of cutting materials, ranging from rubbers and plastics to hardened steel, of up to 3m x 2m in size and up to a thickness of 200mm..

Power Jet Systems (PJS), based in Wolvehampton, West Midlands, UK, has launched a highly flexible Contract Cutting Service for a variety of materials and applications Located in the Ettingshall area, the company offers a contract cutting service for materials of up to 3m x 2m in size and up to a thickness of 200mm

Materials range from rubbers and plastics to hardened steel.

UHP Generators that intensify the water jet operating pressures up to 3,800 bar (55,000 lb/in2) provide the cutting action on the cutting tables, which can an accuracy of +/-0.1mm and cutting speeds of up to 15m/min.

* Integrated with CAD/CAM - water jet cutting offers a number of advantages over conventional cutting techniques, said PJS.

Integrated with a CAD/CAM system, the water jet process can take complex and intricate designs, directly from a client drawing, and convert these to cutting files for production.

Water jet technology cuts materials quickly and cleanly with minimal waste and without distortion.

As the cutting process is 'cold', it does not have any adverse effect on the parent material or coatings when compared with thermal cutting processes such as plasma-ac and lasers.

* Low materials wastage - material wastage is low due to a very narrow UHP water jet kerf width (0.8 - 1.0mm).

Dust and fume emissions are also kept to a minimum.

The process uses pure water and an abrasive mix - these low cost materials combined with a low maintenance system proves an extremely cost effective operation, said PJS.

According to PJS' Matthew Bryan, the potential applications for contract water jet cutting are significant.

"Water jet cutting offers high precision cutting with no adverse effects or induced stress in the material being cut.

Highly accurate cutting software allows intricate 2D shapes to be cut as well as basic machine profiling.

The application has a vast diversity throughout many manufacturing processes," said Bryan.

Although a relatively new venture for PJS, the contract cutting service is already winning customers because of its flexibility and its ability to deliver savings.

"We can offer this service for one off contracts or mass production repeat orders and we were able to achieve a 30% saving in material costs for a recent contract customer when cutting out clutch pad facings, " added Bryan.

* About PJS - Power Jet Systems has been highlighting its capability in the contract cutting market at a number of recent exhibitions including the Midlands Manufacturing Exhibition and SUBCON 2007.

It has also launched a dedicated website.

An associate company of Nuclear Engineering Services Limited (NESL), PJS said it is already a UK market leader in UHP (Ultra High Pressure) water jet cutting and cleaning systems, providing both standard products and bespoke solutions for applications in industrial, construction, defence, aerospace and nuclear markets.
