Designed to hold 15,000 product lines for distribution to trade customers either as stock replenishment or as complete orders, a materials storage system was recently completed.

Pro-Dek Storage Systems has completed a GBP 1 million contract to provide storage and materials handling facilities at a new distribution centre opened at Greenwich, London, by Spicers Ltd, Europe's biggest office products wholesaler The DC has been designed to hold 15,000 product lines for distribution to trade customers either as stock replenishment or as complete orders for onward despatch to end-customers

The racking and handling systems allow for Spicers' own pallets and tote boxes, as well as Euro-pallets and non-standard units loads.

Fast-moving lines are held on static shelving and pallet live storage on a 4000m2 mezzanine built by Pro-Dek to supplement the 10,000m2 ground floor area of the warehouse.

A conveyor system, which sorts completed orders by means of infra-red scanners and bar codes, transfers them to the ground floor packing area via specially designed GRP chutes.

The conveyor system has five sortation lanes which handle orders completed on the mezzanine.

A sixth lane handles orders requiring a further pick from lines on the ground floor.

The whole system is designed to handle 300 tote boxes an hour weighing from 1kg to 30kg.

Pallet live storage, two hydraulic lifts and special dynamic pallet gates designed by Pro-Dek provide stock replenishment for the mezzanine.

This equipment, in conjunction with specially recessed triple-track rollers, has allowed conventional hand pallet trucks to be used, reducing loadings and allowing a more economical structure to be built.

The lifts are rated at 1.8 tonnes and can carry two pallets and an operative.

The main bulk stock is held in racking on the ground floor with 3200 pallet locations.

Split-case items are stored on long-span racking.

A 200mư mezzanine was also built on the ground floor to house a two-storey office block for supervisory staff co-ordinating goods-in and returns.

Stud-partitioned offices were built by Pro-Dek on the main mezzanine floor for warehouse and security staff.
