PICME appoints chief executive officer
Senior adviser with the Process Industries Centre for Manufacturing Excellence, Michael Glass, is taking over as the organisation's chief executive officer from the beginning of March 2006.
Senior adviser with the Process Industries Centre for Manufacturing Excellence, Michael Glass, is taking over as the organisation's chief executive officer from the beginning of March 2006 Current CEO, Mark Lewis, is remaining within the sector but will transfer to the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) and from there will continue to support the process productivity improvement pioneered by PICME, as well as develop projects to sustain the industry in the region

Benchmarks to be set for plastics manufacture

From PICME's beginnings Glass has led PICME's unique and successful approach to continuous improvement in the process industries.
Glass says that he will continue to develop the range of services PICME offers.
Currently he is supporting the industry's emerging 'gold standard' in training and development and is working with the Learning and Skills Council and Sector Skills Councils such as Cogent, Proskills, Skillfast and SEMTA to develop an NVQ in continuous improvement which is tailored to process sector needs covering areas such as Lean manufacturing and six sigma.
"Helping companies in the UK's process industries adopt best practice and achieve manufacturing improvement will continue to be our primary focus." says Glass, adding that, "The real challenge is culture change and we will continue to develop services and tools to help the industry drive and sustain continuous improvement both within their organisations and across their supply chains." Since full establishment by the DTI, PICME is on target with delivering bottom line benefits to its process industry clients whilst facilitating the sort of culture change that is key to the industry's sustainability.
To date PICME has helped these companies secure 1st year benefits of nearly GBP 40 million, over ten times their investment.
Examples of these client benefits through improved manufacturing methods include: * Increased output of between 10%-100% * Reduced waste of between 10%-80% * Reduced changeovers/clean-down times of between 40%-80% * Reduced lead times and stock of between 50%-75%.
All of the above has been achieved with minimal financial expenditure with the PICME maxim of working 'smarter not harder' and with maximum proactive ownership culture.
