3D laser cutter avoids complex drive
systems

A 3D laser cutting machine has direct drive motors and transducers in the laser focusing head to avoid using complex kinematics and gear trains, so eliminating backlash and minimising wear.

Prima's Optimo Evoluzione - the company's latest generation, high capability 3D laser cutting machine for larger components has a novel design of focusing head The head uses direct drive motors and transducers to avoid using complex kinematics and gear trains, so eliminating backlash and minimising wear

The machine's modular construction enables each axis to operate as an independent unit for improved reliability and maintainability.

The Optimo Evoluzione also offers increased dynamics and machining precision, with rotational axis speeds of up to 1.5 rev/s and an accuracy of 0.005 deg.

The machine's adaptive C-axis has an extended stroke of +10mm and will achieve 4G acceleration.

It enables variations in the sheet metal to be followed accurately and also provides a true sixth NC axis.

With a work volume of more than 11m3, the Optimo Evoluzione is ideally suited to large automotive and aerospace component applications.

It features the latest development of Prima's proven magnetic safety joint system, which allows the complete focusing head to break away from its carrier in the event of a collision - ready for immediate re-attachment without damage.

It is also equipped with a state-of-the-art CNC system offering user-friendly touch screen operation for simple, fast and accurate programming.

Prima UK's managing director, Joe Attuoni, said: "The new model benefits from Prima's 30 years of experience at the forefront of laser cutting development, as well as key technology already adopted on the Rapido Evoluzione.

As a result, the Optimo Evoluzione is not only the world's largest 3D laser machine equipped with flying optics, but also becomes the most efficient and productive of its kind".

Prima will also show at EMO its latest version of its ultra high speed Syncrono machine.

For unmanned operation, the machine has a tower storage and automatic work handling unit.

Prima claimed the Syncrono to be the world's fastest and most capable 2D laser cutting machine.

It has a maximum head acceleration of more than 6G.

So the machine can produce more than 1000 holes/min in thin sheet metal.

The Syncrono is effectively two machines in one - a larger unit with a 3000 x 1500mm processing area, combined with a compact, short stroke, high dynamic head.

The result is extremely high cutting rates achieved throughout a large machining envelope.

At the heart of the Syncrono's operation is a series of patented control algorithms that synchronise the parallel kinematics of the head and the main carriages of the machine.

These enable the required cutting trajectory to be generated automatically from standard machine G-code, without the need for any operator intervention.

Capable of increasing productivity by as much as 50% on up to 3mm sheet metal components, the Syncrono challenges the speeds of many CNC punch presses.

In doing so, it eliminates costly tooling, cutter refurbishment, set-up and change-over times.

Prima will demonstrate the Syncrono at EMO working with TowerServer, an automatic work handling system.

It can load, unload and store raw materials and finished blanks under 'lights out' conditions.

Prima claimed that the system is a compact, reliable and highly flexible unit, enabling users to gain the maximum return from their investment in a laser cutting and profiling system.
