Single-mode optical fibres will benefit

Improved capacity afforded by single-mode optical fibres, with the capability of operation at the 850 nanometer window, are expected to bring added value to the LAN and FTTx market.

As a consequence, system providers can build a network with a fibre optic cable that meets today's requirements for multi-mode operation, and which can be upgraded, on the same fibre, to single-mode operation as tomorrow's demands dictate.
The 850nm operation uses standard low-cost VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) devices, while the upgrade can be accomplished simply by switching to single-mode equipment.
"FineLight fibres offer the first real opportunity to bring all three operating windows within the capability of a single optical fibre.
This allows the customer to benefit from any system cost saving that may be offered in the future, independent of the wavelength utilised and without the need to upgrade the cable.
It is a truly futureproof solution " said Sergio Antoci, Senior Product Manager, Fibre and Preforms.
FineLight fibres meet high-capacity requirements with a transmission capability of 100Mbit/s up to 5km for FineLight Base fibre and 1Gbit/s up to 1km for FineLight Giga fibre.
FineLight fibres can operate in all three standard operating windows - 850nm, which is the accepted operating window for multi-mode operation, and 1310nm and 1550nm, the accepted operating windows for single-mode operation.
FineLight fibres meet existing universal standards, including the ITU-T standard G.652, and standard SC, ST and FC style connectors.
Attenuation for both fibres is 2.2dB/km at 850nm.
Bandwidth performance specifications are 600MHz.km for FineLight Base fibre and 1000MHz.km for FineLight Giga fibre.
