High output red laser diodes give high visibility

A Photonic Products product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Mar 12, 2004

High output red laser diodes are suitable for applications requiring high visibility in demanding environments, such as machine vision and where highly visible laser lines ar wanted.

Photonic Products has introduced the HL6525MG and HL6526FM, Opnext's latest high output red laser diodes, with a maximum rated optical output power of 80mW CW, (140mW pulsed), at 658nm.

The HL6525MG and HL6526FM are AlGaInp laser diodes with multi-quantum well, (MQW), structures.

These laser diodes are suitable for applications requiring high visibility in demanding environments, such as machine vision, and also applications that need highly visible laser lines such as required in the wood processing industry and automotive alignment.

The HL6525MG and HL6526FM have a threshold current, (Ith), of 40mA, typical operating current, (Iop), of 110mA, operating voltage, (Vop), of 2.6V, laser diode reverse voltage, (VR(LD)), of 2V and astigmatism, (As), of 1mm.

Both devices have operating temperatures ranges from -10 degrees Centigrade to +70 degrees Centigrade (CW), and -10 degrees Centigrade to +75 degrees Centigrade (pulsed).

The HL6525MG and HL6526FM are supplied in the 5.6mm package that is standard for optical disk drive applications, enabling end products to be kept compact.

The HL6525MG device has a laser diode connection to the outer case, whilst the HL6526FM provides users with a case isolated device.

Note: * In MQW (multi quantum well) structure, the active layer of the laser diode is a laminated structure comprising quantum well layers and barrier layers with a thickness of several nm.

By regulating the composition of the quantum well layers that constitute the light emitting area, and using a crystal with a smaller lattice constant than the substrate, tensile stain is introduced into the quantum well layers.

The band structure varies due to this strain, resulting in lower threshold current and higher slope efficiency.

Photonic Products, founded in 1995, specializes in both the distribution of laser diodes and the custom design and manufacture of optoelectronic components based on semiconductor laser diode technology.
