Pierce nuts preferred for feet attachment
After evaluating various rivet nut alternatives the Dyson engineering team selected pierce nuts as our preferred option to attach feet onto a high performance washing machine.
Incorporating a cold forged head profile that is compatible with industry-standard gas spring units, the new Profil SZB ball pin fastener is ideal for domestic appliance use, as well as for vehicle tailgate and bonnet applications.
It also offers substantial piece part cost and installation speed advantages over competitive fasteners, such as spin riveted components, or threaded fulcrum pegs that require additional captive nuts or welded anchorage points.
The Profil system is available for both self-piercing and pre-pierced material applications and, through the use of custom-developed, automatic feeding and setting equipment, can be installed at up to 40 units per minute - more than ten times faster than alternative fixings.

Profil's presentation of advanced assembly solutions for sheet metal applications will also include examples of pierce nuts and studs in standard and large flange configurations for applications in materials up to 6.0 mm thick.
Product variants include shouldered, conical, ultra low-profile, high shear, flush fitting and restricted access types - as well as nyloc insert versions - to meet individual customer needs.
All are available with M6-M12 threads in a selection of materials, for installation in coated or uncoated materials, high grade, stainless and sandwich steels, as well as aluminium sections or even magnesium castings.
Also on display will be an example of Profil's high speed feeding and insertion equipment, which enables more than 100 fasteners to be installed per minute - at least an order of magnitude faster than riveted or welded alternatives.
The ability to achieve vibration resistant fixings with high static, dynamic and impact load capabilities will be demonstrated by the company's display of applications on BMW's new Mini and two recently unveiled models from Ford and Range-Rover.
Collectively, these latest generation vehicles employ more than 225 Profil fasteners in their construction, in areas ranging from wing mirror retention to safety-critical engine, gearbox and subframe mounts.
A further display of general automotive and domestic appliance applications will highlight Profil's pierce fastening technology in action at other high profile customers, including Dyson, Jaguar, VW-Audi, Rover and Peugeot.
Based in Coalville, Leicestershire, Profil UK draws on more than 30 years experience in the development and application of pierce fastening technology.
The company offers a comprehensive range of fastener styles and installation equipment - all backed by ISO 9001 certification - and is a principal supplier to customers throughout the automotive, domestic appliance and sheet metal fabrication sectors.
