Unmanned CNC punching cell operation is
reliable

Equipment reliability and uptime are paramount for a CNC punch press cell to effectively and successfully operate unmanned throughout the night shift.

To protect empty properties against vandalism and unlawful entry, local councils around the country cover doors and windows with perforated metal sheet One of the largest subcontract producers of these security products is Systems Engineering, which on the basis of a new three-year contract has upgraded its production facility in Telford by installing a Finn-Power automated turret punch press from Press and Shear Machinery, Tamworth

The 'F6 Express' cell works 24 hours a day, mainly turning out 1,000 of the protective screens per week.

However, it also produces families of nested sheet metal parts for other security products such as doors and CCTV cameras as well as for radiator covers, boiler cases, catering equipment, shopfitting, control panels and gaming machines.

A single security screen is made from a 2500mm by 1250mm sheet, which is of galvanised steel, either 1mm or 2mm thick according to the degree of protection required.

In a five minute cycle including automatic sheet load and component unload, square holes measuring 10mm by 10mm are punched to cover the entire sheet, apart from a 10mm border around the edge.

The tool contains punches for producing a cluster of nine holes per hit on a triangular pitch.

During the night the machine runs unattended, as a full stack of sheet on the input table at 6.00 pm lasts at least until the start of the morning shift at 6.00 am.

This avoids the cost of employing a person overnight and the difficulty of finding staff willing to work unsocial hours.

Machined sheets are stacked onto a pallet on the output side of the punching cell, ready for removal by fork lift truck.

Equipment reliability and uptime are paramount, particularly with a contract of this type.

Systems Engineering reports good machine availability since it was installed in August 2002, and prompt service back-up when needed.

After the warranty period has expired, a maintenance contract already entered into with Press and Shear will ensure continuation of trouble-free operation.

Founded in 1996 by director, Andrew Lever, Systems Engineering is an ISO 9002 accredited, sheet metal machining and fabrication specialist.

Its 40,000 sq ft factory boasts an impressive plant list which in addition to turret punch presses comprises a range of CNC sheet metalworking machines including a guillotine, press brakes, a multi-head profile burner, a hydraulic press and a folding machine.

Nesting and programming are supported a Radan CAD/CAM system. Request a free brochure from Press and Shear Machinery ...
