Gifted engineering apprentices receive awards
Some of the UK's most gifted young engineering apprentices will be honoured on Monday 14 November by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) with historic Whitworth Scholarships and Awards.
Inspiring tomorrow's UK engineers
Hundreds of UK Members of Parliament, business leaders, students, engineers and academics will converge at the IMechE for the event, 'Inspiring Tomorrow's Engineers'.
The Award commemorates the life and work of Dr Karen Burt, an eminent physicist, who died tragically young in June 1997.
An active member of the Women's Engineering Society, Karen was a tireless campaigner for the recruitment and retention of women in science and engineering.
The annual Award is made to a woman engineer of high calibre who has newly attained full corporate membership and Chartered Engineer status through her relevant professional Institution and who has contributed to the promotion of the engineering profession.
The recipient receives a cheque for GBP 400 and free membership of the Women1s Engineering Society.
Wild was nominated for the 2003 Award by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) having been admitted to full membership in January 2003.
Wild, who lives in Birmingham, worked for BP and GKN in the UK, France and Germany, before taking up the position of Chief Executive of W.J.Wild.
Speaking at the Award Ceremony Wild paid tribute to the work of Karen Burt and said: "I am deeply honoured to be the recipient of this award.
Karen's work is clearly an inspiration to female engineers of all disciplines and it is wonderful that the WES continues to support and promote women in engineering." Jane has received a plethora of certificates, prizes and awards for her contribution to the engineering profession.
She was one of the 5 founding members of the local IMechE young member panel, which helps to elevate the prominence of young engineers in the area, and has been actively involved with company sponsored schools initiatives.
Since her appointment at W.J.Wild, Wild has significantly improved the financial performance of the company.
She has achieved this through the successful turnaround of an automotive component business, securing employment opportunities and preparing the way for growth.
The Karen Burt Award is funded by a bequest made by Burt's father, Professor Cyril Hilsum CBE FRS FEng.
