After several months of negotiations, the UK's ImechE, IEE and IIE agreed to halt exploratory talks on creating a new interdisciplinary Institute - the proposed Institute of Engineering.

It has been announced that after several months of negotiations, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) have agreed that the exploratory talks on creating a new interdisciplinary Institute, the proposed Institute of Engineering (IOE), should not continue The IMechE, which represents over 77,000 mechanical engineers world-wide, has expressed its deep disappointment at the failure of the IOE negotiations, however the exploratory talks have identified a great deal of common ground between the three institutions and each will now investigate ways of building on this

In particular, the IMechE will be looking to see where the potential for closer co-operation can best be harnessed for the benefit not only of their members, but also the engineering profession as a whole.

Professor Chris Taylor, IMechE President, commented, "Although we are all saddened by this failure, each Institution has an obligation and responsibility to protect the interests of its members.

The IEE and IIE are valued professional partners that represent their respective sectors well.

We currently work together on a wide range of events and wish to continue this co-operation with our colleagues in the future.

We should all take time to reflect on the constructive work which has taken place over the last ten months and establish if there are any grounds to pick up negotiations in the future.".
