How to get to grips with the basics of Profinet

A Profibus product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Oct 26, 2006

A one-day course is intended to help engineers and technicians who have a basic working knowledge of Profibus, but who want to see how Profinet fits into the automation scene.

Presented by the PI Competence Centre at the new Automation Systems Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University, this is a practical 'Get you going' course for first time Profinet users.

It is intended to help engineers and technicians who have a basic working knowledge of Profibus, but who want to see how Profinet fits into the automation scene.

Like other Automation Systems Centre courses, the course provides a good balance of theory and practice to help you see where Profinet can be applied and show you how this can be done with real equipment.

The course starts with an overview of Profinet technology and applications, showing how the technology has been developed by building on over 15 years of Profibus experience.

It provides an overview of the operation and applications of Profinet technology and goes on to cover the basics of Ethernet and TCP/IP communications and includes hands-on practicals with setting up and checking of real devices.

Covering the theory and practice of Profinet system layout and installation the course also teaches the basics of GSDML files and system configuration.

In MMU's usual practical manner, students will set up and exercise a real Profinet system.

The course concludes with an overview of other emerging Industrial Ethernet standards and shows how these compare and contrast with Profinet.

Costing just GBP375 per person inclusive, with a reduction for GBP338 for members of the UK Profibus User Group, the fee covers a full set of course notes, lunch and all refreshments throughout the day and an attendance certificate.
