Based on the specialised provision of deep hole drilled and honed components, Premier is willings to take on jobs and materials that other companies 'shy away' from doing.

With customers in the oil and gas sector accounting for 40% of turnover for Premier Deep Hole Drilling, it is no surprise that managing director Stuart Grant emphasises the importance of this business to the St Albans, UK-based company Based on the specialised provision of deep hole drilled and honed components, Premier's willingness to take on jobs and materials that other companies shy away from has continually reinforced its presence in this area, Grant says

And now, with the company's concerted move into offering value-added machining on the same workpieces, Grant is confident that business levels will grow in what he describes as a buoyant industry sector.

A wide range of components have been processed for offshore drilling and exploration companies and their top tier suppliers over the past 16 years - including wellheads, manifolds and, increasingly, components used for data monitoring and flow measurement purposes in drill head assemblies.

"Like all our work, highly concentric deep holes finished to micron finishes are commonplace on these components," Grant comments.

"But in reality, oil and gas work is not treated by us any differently to any other components being processed for, say, our customers in the aerospace, motor sport, medical and hydraulics sectors.

Every component is treated the same - i e, produced exactly to drawing - and the care and attention it receives does not change whether the holes are 3000mm deep, are ground to one micron tolerances or honed to < 0.1 micron Ra.

"It is all about providing the customer with exactly what is required, when required - and this has been a driving factor in our investment in value-added machining services." Accredited to BS EN ISO 9002, Premier Deep Hole Drilling maintains 26 gun drilling machines for holes from 2.5mm diameter by 3000mm deep; three ejector drilling machines for holes up to 75mm diameter by 1500mm deep; 13 honing machines for honing bores from 2.5mm to 150mm diameter; plus a wide range of CNC turning (up to six-axis) and milling (four-axis) machines complemented by surface and cylindrical grinding technology.
