Proven reliability, ease of operation and quality pack presentation ensure that a manufacturer of chilled and frozen gourmet ready meals has maintained its relationship with tray sealer supplier Packaging Automation (PA) London (UK) Bigham's Global Gastronomy was founded in 1996 on the principles of using the finest fresh ingredients

It prides itself on its attention to detail, which shows in the quality food it produces, said PA.

Equally important is the attention it pays to its packaging operations and that is where Bigham's four-year partnership with PA has proved fruitful through the use of four of the company's PA182 entry level rotary tray sealing machines.

The semi-automatic twin station PA182 is designed to be flexible by allowing tray size change-overs in just two minutes, said PA.

It can seal and trim film from a reel on to trays of various materials including, but not limited to, CPET, polypropylene, PVC, board and foil.

The machine's compact design minimises the space required allowing it to be easily moved to accommodate changes in production, for example, from one production line to another, added the company.

The four machines supplied to Bighams have helped to provide a firm foundation for the company's consistent product quality and growth, which has carried on through the company's rapid expansion and move to a new factory.

Bighams - which supplies ready meals in PET and foil trays with pack sizes of 200g for its biggest retail supermarket customer, Waitrose, and 2kg packs for the food service sector - is pleased with the quality of the machines supplied by PA, and with the successful long-standing relationship.

Production manager, Boris Pucelle, said: "Because PA's machines have always worked well, we naturally continue to specify the rotary tray sealers, besides which, the machines have been upgraded since we bought our first one." Purcelle added that the machines' flexibility perfectly fits Bigham's needs, allowing swift and easy tray size changeovers.

He concluded: "I have a very good relationship with PA, which provides a very personal service and each person on its team is easy to deal with." The PA182 can also be supplied with a MAP-F option, which allows the gas flushing of packs hence altering the mix of gases in the sealed pack to improve shelf life and enhance the aesthetics of the product depending on the mix of gases used.

During the gas flushing process, the ambient air in the pack is purged by flushing a gas or combination of gases in to the tray immediately before sealing.

Neil Ashton, PA's sales manager commented: "The demand for pre-packed fresh produce, increased shelf life and improved appearance of produce and packs have all lead to an increase in the requirement for heat sealed trays and gas flushing." As with all PA machines, the PA182 is available to rent as well as purchase.

The rental option is particularly attractive to smaller businesses or those with new to market products as there is no minimum rental period, said PA.

The company's service support team is also available free of charge 24 hours a day to all rental customers.
