Univib measures rolling mill vibration

An Univib product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 20, 2009

Univib will supply the Gulf Aluminium Rolling Company (Garmco) with an on-line vibration monitoring system covering a cold rolling mill and a combination roll grinding machine that supplies the mill.

Univib's Avas vibration monitoring systems will be installed on both the mill and the grinding machine to provide the operators of the plant with early warning of the onset of abnormal vibrations.

The systems will also track and trend the levels of all of the usual exciters and will warn if the levels of any of these increase above tolerable thresholds.

The mill system incorporates chock temperature monitoring to warn of any lubrication problems that might, if left unchecked, lead to bearing failure.

The contract also includes the supply of Univib's post-process roll inspection system, Chatter-Detect, a tool that performs a final check that rolls have been ground chatter free.

All coil and roll vibration histories will be stored in a common database so that, should any issues occur, the historic data can be further analysed by means of queries to help track down the source.

The installation of the vibration monitoring systems will mean that Garmco can increase productivity by rolling strip at even higher mill speeds with the confidence that its customers will continue to receive high-quality strip product.
