Commenting on the results, Sidetracker's Managing Director David Dobson said 'the results in terms of process and cultural improvements are staggering'.
Sidetracker Engineering of Clowne, design and manufacture high quality multidirectional forklift trucks and side-loaders for handling long and awkward loads in confined spaces - allowing customers to save space, time and money.
David Dobson visited organisations that are part of the Inside UK Enterprise (IUKE) 'best practice' scheme in order to see what real improvements could be possible for his own company.
After discussions with a Manufacturing Practitioner from the East Midlands MAS, the Sidetracker team embarked on a practical programme of improvement.
The management and production team undertook a training presentation on Lean Manufacturing principles, after which they selected techniques that would give the greatest process and cultural improvements.
As one example, the production area was reorganised using a simple technique called 5s.
This particular technique focuses on making the work areas much more focused on those issues in the production that cause loss of value adding time, whilst also making them not only safer but also more user friendly Overall, the improvements have resulted in increasing the production capacity by 20% as well as allowing Sidetracker to meet price demands without losing profit.
