Intervention by MAS has resulted in a 20% increase in value of sales for a Lincolnshire based nursery furniture and play equipment manufacturer through more effective parts and materials control.

When Lincolnshire based manufacturer Millhouse Manufacturing Designs Ltd recently called in a practitioner from the East Midlands Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) their objective was clear - to increase the value of sales delivered consistently per week The company was established in 1980 to manufacture wooden nursery furniture and play equipment, and prides themselves on their 'hand crafted' products, which they achieve with the help of state of the art machines, equipment and techniques

All work is completed on-site, giving the company control of quality and delivery, and also the flexibility to produce small batch, from 10 upwards, to large batch production.

Millhouse had already gone through a number of efficiency improvement programmes, but none of these were completely embedded and therefore did not deliver their expected gains.

The MAS practitioner soon established that whilst Millhouse had some good equipment, there existed an issue over the effective control of parts and materials, resulting in inefficiency of bills of materials, and costing for each product.

As a consequence, production targets and sales were adversely affected.

The company were led through a series of manufacturing related improvement processes that helped to considerably reduce the time it takes for set-up of machines between changeovers.

The productivity of production machinery was notably enhanced by 14%, along with the removal of bottlenecks from the production process.

In addition, a whole new bill of materials was created for the manufacturing process.

To date, value of sales to the company have increased by no less than 20%.

Commenting on the project, Mike Outram, managing director of Millhouse Manufacturing Design said: "MAS bring a fresh mind and experience to our company, with the ability to affect the working culture of the firm in a way the directors can't easily achieve.".
