A horizontal continuous billet casting machine uses a graphite crucible furnace with its naturally oxygen-reducing characteristics to produce silver and silver alloy billets.

Rautomead, of Dundee, Scotland, has sold one of its horizontal continuous silver and silver alloy billet casting machines to Cimini and Associates, of Rhode Island, USA The machine is a model RT 650 single strand billet caster, which will be fed with pre-alloyed molten metal to cast 4in (100mm) diameter silver and silver alloy billets

The billets will then be used in a followi-on extrusion operation.

Cimini may also use the RT 650 produce flat products up to 6in (150mm) wide.

The RT 650 continuous caster uses a graphite crucible furnace with its naturally oxygen-reducing characteristics.

These characteristic makes the machine suitable for holding and casting of silver, which is otherwise very prone to oxygen pick-up in the molten state, said Rautomead.

Rautomead chairman, Sir Michael Nairn, said: "As an organisation that regularly sells continuous casting equipment on a global scale, it was nevertheless particularly rewarding to secure this significant order for the supply of a silver billet caster with a company in the United States".

Following delivery, a Rautomead engineer will commission the machine at the customer's works in USA.

* Continuous casting of bronze - Rautomead has also sold two horizontal continuous casting machines to Rapsri Engineering Industries, of Bangalore, India.

Rapsri produces of high quality bronze alloy bearings.

The two Rautomead machines - an RT 650 and an RMT 200 model - will enable Tapsri to expand the range of continuously cast alloys and product sizes.

* Copper rod caster - Rautomead has also lately won an order from Metalka Majur, of Serbia, to supply an RS 3000/6 upwards-vertical copper rod continuous casting machine.

The RS 3000/6 will be the fourth Rautomead copper rod casting machine to be installed in Serbia.

The RS 3000/6 model will produce high quality 8mm oxygen-free copper rod at a new cable manufacturing facility being established by Metalka at Jagodina, south-east of Belgrade.

Metalka manufactures a range of modern electrical switchgear and its move into cable-making is a major expansion for the company.
