Rexam Glass Dongen in The Netherlands, is producing Ouwehand's anniversary jar to celebrate 100 years supplying pickled herring to the Dutch market.

The stylish glass jar utilises a full-colour printed sleeve instead of the traditional label, which is a said to be a unique approach in the marinated fish market.

The design of the sleeve allowed Ouwehand to communicate more product information than was usually possible.

The sleeve was designed by Brummelkamp and Hoekstra, a Dutch packaging design company.

The use of the sleeve instead of the traditional label has facilitated a number of improvements, both for the actual product and the way it is filled at Ouwehand.

The application of the sleeve has led to a decrease in the noise level throughout the factory, due to the labelling machine no longer being required.

The sleeve also provides the jar with insulating properties, which is a great advantage for the consumer, especially during the warmer months, said Rexam.

Ouwehand is one of the largest seafood processors in The Netherlands and distributes its products through four channels - specialist fish stores, supermarkets, wholesale and export.

It specialises in four product areas - marinated, smoked, fresh and baked fish and uses only freshly processed fish in all its products.

The whole supply chain is controlled to ensure high quality standards across the product range.

Ouwehand pickled herring is available in most supermarkets across The Netherlands.

It is produced according to a traditional secret recipe, using natural vinegar and spices, which give Ouwehand's pickled herring its distinctive taste.

Rexam Glass's sleeved Anniversary jar for Ouwehand is available for a limited three month period between October and December.
