Machine tool setting, probing are
cableless

By using an aoptical receiver in a tool setting probe and a touch probe mounted on the machine tool's spindle, the operations can be carried out without awkward cables.

At the forthcoming EMO machine tool show in Hannover, Germany, Renishaw will show its twin probe optical signal transmission system It uses a single optical receiver for tool setting probe and a spindle-mounted touch probe

In this way, integrating the probing systems is speeded up and the machine tools are free of cables for such devices.

The twin probe system can be used with many machining centres and CNC milling machines to provide automated on-machine setting, tool breakage detection, workpiece set-up and workpiece verification.

A typical twin probe system consists of a Renishaw OTS tool setter and Renishaw OMP40-2 inspection probe.

Renishaw said that other compatible spindle-mounted touch probes having modulated optical transmission can also be used.

Normally machine tools having twin pallets or rotary tables are problematical when trying to fit hard-wired tool breakage detection systems or workpiece probing.

Because the Renishaw system has no cables, fitting such machine tool installations with probing systems is very much simplified.

The twin probe system uses Renishaw's OMI-2T optical receiver.

It has Renishaw's latest modulated optical transmission, which offers the highest levels of resistance to light interference.

The OMI-2T also activates either the spindle-mounted touch probe or tool setting probe, and gives visual indication of the activated device.

Renishaw's OTS tool setting probe with optical transmission is a robust, compact and cable-free product.

It does not restrict machine table movement.

Users also benefit from broken tool detection and rapid measurement of tool length and diameter.

The Renishaw OMP40-2 meets the demand for probing on small machining centres and the growing family of high-speed machines fitted with small HSK and small taper spindles.

Using Renishaw's unique Trigger-Logic programming method, its user programmable parameters make the OMP40-2 simple to optimise for machine applications and probe options ar easily programmable.

The design avoids the need to access internal probe components and so eliminates the risk of damage arising from coolant and debris ingress.

The Renishaw probes are sealed to withstand harsh machine tool environments.

The company said too that the probes are highly resistant to false triggering induced by shock and vibration.

The Renishaw OMP40-2 is fully compatible with existing and future Renishaw optical systems.
