The new SM range of high performance worm gearboxes from Rehfuss Drives provides efficiencies of over 90%, together with extended lifespans.

The new SM range of high performance worm gearboxes from Rehfuss Drives provides efficiencies of over 90%, together with extended lifespans These exceptionally quiet running gearboxes combine a rugged, smooth-bodied, gearbox housing with a ground steel worm and generously proportioned phosphor bronze wheel, both carried in deep grooved ball bearings, to provide excellent power transmission up to 4kW

Unlike similar models, the SM range is cast using a shell moulding process rather than being die cast.

This produces a smooth and more robust single aluminium housing.

The thicker housing provides greater flexibility for mounting and allows for different mounting holes and positions.

Rigidity is further enhanced by the lack of separate side covers which also minimises joint faces and thus eliminates lubricant leakage.

The drives can be supplied with directly coupled motors, or standard IEC frame types, connected through the unique Rehfuss coupling which stops the transmission of radial and axial loads to the motor bearings.

Shaft fretting corrosion is therefore eliminated between the motor shaft and gearbox input which significantly reduces temperature rises and extends gearbox and motor life.

The range is available with shaft centres from 31mm to 80mm.

Solid shaft, hollow shaft and flange-mounted versions are offered and all are available with an optional integral torque limiter.

The superior robustness of the SM range has recently been demonstrated in an antenna drive in a marine radar system.

The radar project nearly foundered after exhaustive tests, on products from no less than twelve manufacturers, failed to come up with a gearbox capable of withstanding rigorous and varied oceanic conditions.

The SM series worm gearbox fulfilled the design requirements and successfully completed a test programme which included: start-up in 100 knot winds, ambient operating temperatures from -40øC to +70øC (including solar radiation effects), bearing lubricant temperatures from -40øC to +95øC, vibration tests at natural frequency for periods of three hours, 30,000 stop-start cycles and direct on-line starting.

Further applications will include: vehicle lifting, industrial conveyors and the main drive on packaging and filling machines.
