Disc laser performs machining,
micro-welding
A diode-pumped disc laser for micro-machining performs quasi-simultaneous welding of larger plastics parts, seam welding of aluminium or copper and lap welding of 100 micron metal foils.
At Laser 2003 in Munich, Rofin presented a number of new products from all areas including the novel 'disc laser' technology The Laser Micro division is the centre of excellence within the Rofin Group for laser-based systems targeted at fine welding, fine cutting, and micro-structuring

In medical device manufacture, pulsed Nd:YAG lasers now can do the work of profiling increasingly finer, structures.
The following new products were launched at the show: StarWeld Disc - due to the unique combination of high power and excellent beam quality, the StarWeld Disc, a diode-pumped disc laser for micro-machining, is satisfying completely new application areas.
The list includes quasi-simultaneous welding of larger plastics parts, seam welding of aluminium or copper, lap welding of 100 micron metal foils for fuel cell production, as well as high-speed micro-welding with scanner head deflection (dynamic beam).
New dimensions in terms of power are also explored in laser metal sintering and high-speed cutting.
The StarWeld Disc is available either with fiber-coupled fixed optics or scanner heads.
The highly flexible laser control, including the LCD display, is already integrated into the all-in-one housing.
The new Desktop from the StarWeld Manual family - Rofin presented both the sixth generation of the Performance series as well as the new Desktop series.
The lasers of the StarWeld Manual family represent the simplest and most cost-effective models for flexible spot and seam welding of metals.
The unique sweet spot resonator and the newly introduced micro-welding option allow ultra-fine weld spots far below 100um diameter as well as constant penetration welds on highly reflective metals such as copper or silver.
To make it easier for new users to gain confidence in the capabilities of manual laser welding, Rofin introduced the special Bright Idea program, where the laser system is installed for one month on-site and training by an expert is arranged, including the demonstration of various laser welding techniques.
