New polyamides give greater impact performance

A Rhodia Engineering Plastics product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Aug 7, 2001

Rhodia Engineering Plastics will be using the K'2001 exhibition to present the outstanding success of its highflow TECHNYL-STAR resin through a number of fully commercialised applications.

Rhodia Engineering Plastics, the second largest global supplier of polyamide, will be using the K'2001 exhibition in Dusseldorf this October to present the outstanding success of its highflow TECHNYL-STAR resin through a number of fully commercialised applications and other advanced developments.

The show will also be the launch platform for new grades and new types of applications for both its TECHNYL and TECHNYL-STAR families of polyamide materials.

The new products have been developed to provide added impact, chemical and temperature performance in critical applications, many of which will be featured in Rhodia's on-stand presentation, along with other key examples of the company's leadership in polyamide technology.

The exhibition will also be providing a timely forum for Rhodia to present new expansions of already large-scale production capacity for its polyamide resins.

Being presented by Rhodia at K'2001 for the first time, there will be a number of applications utilising TECHNYL-STAR S and TECHNYL-STAR SX materials.

These products, launched at the National Plastics Exhibition (NPE) in Chicago, US, in June of last year, have now found a fit in a large range of applications.

TECHNYL-STAR S delivers a fast cycling time and TECHNYL-STAR SX delivers faster cycling in combination with higher stiffness, both products also provide outstanding surface appearance.

These characteristics, together with the excellent thermal, mechanical and chemical properties of TECHNYL-STAR polyamide, translate into faster processing at lower temperatures and pressures and have stimulated strong market interest.

Product application sectors to be represented on Rhodia's stand embrace automotive, sport and leisure and domestic appliances.

Automotive applications in TECHNYL-STAR polyamide to be presented will include engine covers and air intake manifolds, as well as interior trim and exterior body parts.

Applications displayed in sport and appliances will demonstrate the replacement capability of TECHNYL-STAR polyamide, both of metals, in the example of fishing reels, and of other polymers as in the case of washing machine doors and fascia panels.

In this mass produced application, fast cycling, superior surface finish, self coloured TECHNYL-STAR polyamide has eliminated the need for painting and brings new performance in processing.

New introductions in the TECHNYL-STAR polyamide family will include TECHNYL-STAR S 246 V35, a new impact modified grade that can, for example, be ideal for power tool applications.

To be commercialised coincidentally with K 2001 are TECHNYL A218 G1 V 30 and TECHNYL A218 G2 V 30, specifically designed to give new long-term resistance to all forms of glycol, according to OEM requirements.

Additionally both material grades offer higher heat resistance enabling them to accommodate the projected future increase in cooling system operating temperatures.

Moreover, each of these new TECHNYL grades will be available in 25 percent and 30 percent glass reinforced versions to meet both European and North American OEM's criteria for mechanical properties.

Rhodia Engineering Plastics, headquartered in Lyon, France, is the world's second largest producer of polyamide engineering thermoplastic materials.

The company has a sales network that spans the world, with manufacturing plants and technical development centres in Europe, North America, South America and Asia.

Rhodia is one of the world's leaders in specialty chemicals providing products and services to the automotive, healthcare, fragrance, apparel, electronics, personal care and environmental markets.

Rhodia is listed on the Paris and New York stock exchanges, employs 30,000 people worldwide and generated net sales of Euro 7.4bn in 2000.
