The Department of Chemistry at Oxford, which is the largest in the western world, has contributed over 40 million pounds in cash to the University as a result of its spin-out activities.
This return comes from the successes of Oxford Molecular and Oxford Asymmetry International, both of which had successful initial public offerings, floating on the London Stock Exchange, and later sold.

In addition, a novel partnership with IP2IPO Ltd (formerly Beeson Gregory) produced 20 million pounds towards financing the new 60 million pound Chemistry Research Lab.
The new laboratory (five floors covering ~16,500 m2), has also received grants from the JIF, Wolfson Foundation, EP Abraham Trust, Thomas Swan and the Salters Company in addition to a new partnership with Beeson Gregory.
Dr Karl Harrison, IT Coordinator and Training Officer Central Chemistry at the University, explains how the project will be presented.
"I was charged with constructing a multimedia presentation about the building, based on a Virtual Tour, this will be used while we wait for the Queen to arrive with the Chancellor of Oxford University, Chris Patten, CH, the Vice Chancellor Sir Colin Lucas and all the senior figures of the university.
Then when the Queen arrives it will be used to show her the facilities around the building." "I have been using REALVIZ Stitcher for a number of years," continues Harrison "and with every new version released it improves, and so too has the quality of my work.
I especially like the new features of EXIF data reading, automatic max size rendering and the important addition of added high quality interpolation methods.
Stitcher is integral to my workflow due to its efficiency and speed of production.
I often generate large numbers of nodes on a site visit and REALVIZ Stitcher allows me to build high quality panoramas very rapidly." The Tour was recently featured by James Knight in his Sunday Times feature, 'Wonders of the Web Grand Tour', which appeared on 18.
January 2004 in which he descibes the site as, "like a don's bookshelf, the arrangement is haphazard, but full of pleasant surprises." The Virtual Oxford Tour can be found at: http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/oxfordtour/.
